Three key initiatives

AMEC's policy is be “part of the conversation” with publisher groups and publishers. We have a key role to educate publishers on the impact of proposed licences. AMEC has an active Licensing & Copyright Committee, led by Jeremy Thompson, Managing Director of Durrants and an AMEC Board Director.

Many AMEC members operate in countries where publishers have not yet organised themselves to charge licence fees on copyright content. However, an AMEC objective – and this e-newsletter is a demonstration of that – is to provide information to our members to inform them of developments in other parts of the world.  At the current time AMEC is involved in three major initiatives. We are meeting with the NLA in the UK to discuss the proposed Media Evaluation Company Licence (MEC) the NLA plans to introduce in the summer of this year. An AMEC team is holding constructive talks with the NLA with the intention of helping to shape the final Licence so that it is seen to be fair for our members.

The second initiative is the development of what AMEC is calling the Knowledge Rights Base. It is the idea of John Croll, CEO of Media Monitors, an AMEC member in Asia Pac and a member of AMEC's Licensing Committee. The idea is to build an online knowledge base to share information about licensing agreements in different parts of the world. The benefit to members is that it will assist members to undertand best practice agreements that have already been negotiated and also understand the pitfalls from previous agreements. We see this as a Global member benefit for AMEC members and helpful in establishing an improved consistency of content rights agreements. AMEC's Licensing Committee is now developing the Knowledge Base with a target launch date of late April. Our third new project is to discuss a proposal for the new Strategic Partnership with FIBEP to focus on a major content licensing initiative. Representatives of the Joint Working Group will hold a planning meeting in London next week (w/c 22nd March). Further news of this will be announced soon.
